Corn, Drug, and Rocks that Rolled
This was quite an adventurous day. We left out campsite in Sioux Falls and headed West to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.  Of course Mitch had a great time taking pictures of things with his name on it.  The corn palace is a free tourist attraction that showed off corn art.  The corn art is basically mosaics made out of ears  of corn.  It was surprisingly detailed. If you make it big enough, it works. We walked around town a bit and got some more pix of things with Mitchell and headed West again.
We saw signs for most of  South Dakota about a place called Wall Drug.  It is like a western version of  South of the Border...a great big tourist trap that is Campy, but you have to stop to say you've been there.  It is much more than a pharmacy and wanders for blocks.  They sell everything from books to throwing knives. We had to get back on the road, so were  glad it was easy on/easy  off.
We finally got to Sturgis, where we were staying. We stayed at Rush -No-More campground.  It was set at the base of a mountain which is part of the Black Hills Range.  We set up the camper in record time, hopped in the car and drove back a few miles to  Rapid City to see Mount Rushmore.  We grabbed a bite to  eat, Mitch had buffalo stew.  The sky was threatening and we had a little bit of rain, but nothing major. We walked all around and saw the sculptor's studio.  We were amazed at how much of the monument was sculpted by dynamite.  We learned that 90% of the rock that rolled down the hill was removed by accurately placed dynamite charges.  Behind the monument he created a chamber for storing historical documents... It was like a time capsule but had nothing in it until 1998, when a history of the United States thus far and information about those who built it were placed inside.  We then went up the presidential trail.  This is 250 steps up toward the monument. We got lots of pix.  The sunset was beautiful. We headed back to the campground.
The air was getting chilly as the sun set. We got back and the sky was full of stars.  The wind coming off the mountain was refreshing, so we slept with the windows open.  We awoke to the peace of the Black Hills and a chorus of birds  This campground is away from the hubbub but worth the drive.  The facilities were clean, the people were friendly and helpful.
We got our one propane tank filled, got road ready and are headed for Montana.
